Repression of Human Rights Defenders in Uzbekistan includes death in detention, forced psychiatric hospitalisation, harassment
Vienna, 13 July 2001– The IHF today sent a letter to President Karimov of Uzbekistan, raising concern over recent attacks on local human rights defenders. The letter specifically raised concern over the following cases: – The death in detention of Mr. Shovrik Ruzimuradov, head of the Kashkadaria office of the Society for Human Rights of Uzbekistan (SHRU);

I am writing on behalf of the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights (IHF), a human rights organization based in Austria, to express our dismay at the death in detention of a well-known human rights figure in Uzbekistan, Shovrik Ruzimuradov; to raise our concerns about the continuous harassment of other Uzbek human rights activists; and to ask for your urgent intervention in these specific cases.
