Repression of Human Rights Defenders in Uzbekistan includes death in detention, forced psychiatric hospitalisation, harassment

Vienna, 13 July 2001– The IHF today sent a letter to President Karimov of Uzbekistan, raising concern over recent attacks on local human rights defenders. The letter specifically raised concern over the following cases: – The death in detention of Mr. Shovrik Ruzimuradov, head of the Kashkadaria office of the Society for Human Rights of Uzbekistan (SHRU);
