Dear Mr. Yakubov:
As you may be aware, I represent several young Uzbeks recently detained by US authorities based on extradition request by the Uzbeks government for the «crime» of belonging to unapproved religious organization. I am aware of the fact that you recently issued a letter in support of their cases.
Unfortunately, in your letter you incorrectly claimed that the Uzbek government believes this young individuals to have become «terrorists» in the United States. This is not true, because even the Uzbek government never went as far as to claim that. The Uzbek government seeks their extradition solely on the basis of the Uzbek law prohibiting membership in certain religious organizations they term «extremist».
I believe that overstating the case made by the Uzbek government against these young individuals may hurt them in the US, because it may give the US authorities grounds to substantiate their belief that they might be a danger to the community, therefore allowing the immigration service to continue to detain them.
Based on the above, I think a correction of your prior statement may be appropriate, clarifying that the Uzbek governement does not seek their extradition on any grounds other than membership in a religious organization labeled as «extremist» by the Uzbek authorities without any due process or substantiation, in violation of the appropriate international norms.
Please le me know of your position in this regard.
Very truly yours,
John J. Gallagher, Esq.
P.S. Thank you for the document you mailed to me. Do you have an English verision of the document?
